Fortuna Community Garden Press Release

The Fortuna Community Garden is in the process of being created to provide space for local community members to enjoy the experience of gardening. A quality plot of land has been donated for that use by the Christ Lutheran Church on Smith Lane. The Fortuna Community Garden hopes to encourage people of all ages and abilities to grow their own food. This project is a collaborative effort of the AmeriCorps Cadre of Corps, the City of Fortuna, Christ Lutheran Church, the California Conservation Corps, St Lukes Manor, the Fortuna Garden Club, the UC Agricultural Extension Service, and local landscape professionals.

The materials and tools needed to complete this project are extensive. Among the needs are gardening tools, top soil, manure, lumber, seeds, and a soil test kit. Donation of service has already been received from Don Meyer at Fortuna High School. The Fortuna Community Garden is also in the process of working with the City of Fortuna for other needed assistance. Additional donations from local businesses are being sought.

Thirty raised bed plots are planned to be available for this summer's use and there is room for future expansion. The garden will be yielding food year round, and space will be available for families, seniors, individuals, community groups and local businesses. The ultimate goals of the Fortuna Community Garden are to provide a park-like atmosphere to neighboring residents, give people a place to work together and meet new people, supply fresh produce to local food banks, and provide quality horticultural education to participants.
