The actual physical start of the garden took place during the summer and fall of 1996. The land was plowed as deeply as possible, then tilled several times. Topsoil and soil amendments were brought in to raise the low spots and to fill the planting beds. After all the plumbing was put into place, the beds were built. Perennial herbs were planted this summer, as well as a few decorative plants. November marked the first vegetable crop planting - several pounds of garlic sets were planted for harvest next summer.

There were plenty of volunteers to help with digging and planting. The side of the garden that faces the parking lot was designed with a low berm and is being planted with herbs, perennials, shrubs and small trees.
