Selecting Plants for the Garden

As you read before, the secret to having this type of garden is to select plants that are dormant during the dry summer and do their growing during the times of year that the rains fall. All our native plants have adapted to this type of climate. The type of climate that we enjoy here on the North Coast is called a Mediterranean climate. There are only a few areas in the world that have this type - obviously the Mediterranean area, but also parts of Chile, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

We can assure success by selecting native plants from these areas, and also choosing plants that will tolerate this climate. Most of these plants are available in the local nurseries or can be ordered.

The North Coast Chapter of the California Native Plant Society has a tremendous choice of native plants that could be incorporated into this garden. Check out their site for other information and related links.
